Housing dashboard for local authority

Our client is a large London Council who produce regular reporting to monitor the number of empty properties in the borough.

Background

The report was highly manual and time-consuming to produce and only provided a static table of data which was difficult to obtain insights from.

Given the challenging context and changing living arrangements during the pandemic, the Council needed to be able to highlight any trends or changes that would impact their income from shifts in empty properties

Approach

Our approach focused on understanding the measures that mattered most to stakeholders and producing an interactive dashboard that could meet a range of needs. Our approach included:

  • Scoping workshop to understand the datasets and reporting requirements
  • Understanding of current state processes for collating reports
  • Developing an Excel model to automate data import
  • Building a Power BI dashboard with interactive functionality including existing measures and our own recommendations for new insights
  • An iterative process to allow stakeholders to reflect on new insights available and develop further functionality
  • Comprehensive user acceptance testing (UAT) and detailed user guide for updating the reports on a monthly basis

Outcomes

The Power BI dashboard we produced was highly engaging, with interactive functionality for the user to slice and dice data based on their specific needs. Other outcomes included:

  • Month on month comparison for the year (previously current vs last)
  • Ability to filter by month, tax band, discount code, days empty, with all visuals and graphs updating as the user interacts with the dashboard.
  • Interactive functionality with the ability to drill down from summary to insights, to detailed data
  • Location graphs highlight geographical insights to where empty properties are, including the ability to zoom in on properties in street view.
  • Drill down to detailed underlying data with the ability to export into an Excel sheet to be used as an actions log to drive action
