2019: The year of Alexander von Humboldt

This year was deemed as the Year of Alexander von Humboldt, with the German naturalist and explorer’s 250 birthday being May of 2019.

Although Humboldt was born in Germany, he was notorious for making the world his home. The naturalist and explorer made Paris his home for 25 years and traveled to South America in 1799, visiting Venezuela and mapping over 2,700 km of the Orinoco River. In addition to exploring much of Venezuela, Humboldt continued his adventure through modern day Ecuador and Peru. Humboldt was the first to find reasoning behind altitude sickness, and also discovered and measured the Peruvian Current. Although these contributions were significant, they are only a portion of what Alexander von Humboldt contributed to the world through his meticulous studies during exploration. After his trip to South America, he traveled to Washington D.C. where he met former President Thomas Jefferson, and later returned to Paris and Berlin where he began giving lectures about his learnings around the world. In his late 70s, in 1845 he published “Kosmos”, which included his detailed lectures that grew in popularity each year. Soon thereafter, there were five total volumes of the book published. Unfortunately, after a stroke in his mid-80s, Humboldt’s health began to decline and eventually lead to his death on May 6, 1859. To this day, Humboldt is recognized internationally for his significant contributions that are still used in earth sciences.

To celebrate Alexander von Humboldt’s life and contributions, Humboldt 250 in Berlin-Brandenburg region will be hosting a variety of exhibitions, scientific conferences and events organized by 13 participating cultural institutions. More information on these celebrations can be found here.

As a cosmopolitan contributor, his country of origin is not the only one celebrating his life. In Colombia, the large bank “Banco de la Republica” is honoring Humboldt’s 250th birthday with ongoing conferences, spanning through February through May. The conferences will vary in topics, but will focus on the major contributions of Humboldt’s travels through the Americas. Similarly, countries impacted by his life such as Peru, will host celebrations throughout the country in form of scientific presentations and conferences.

Aunque Humboldt nació en Alemania, era famoso por hacer del mundo su hogar. El naturalista y explorador hizo de París su hogar durante 25 años y viajó a Sudamérica en 1799, visitando Venezuela y mapeando más de 2,700 km del río Orinoco. Además de explorar gran parte de Venezuela, Humboldt continuó su aventura a través de los tiempos modernos de Ecuador y Perú. Humboldt fue el primero en encontrar el razonamiento detrás del mal de altura, y también descubrió y midió la corriente peruana. Si bien estas contribuciones fueron significativas, son solo una parte de lo que Alexander von Humboldt contribuyó al mundo a través de sus meticulosos estudios durante la exploración. Después de su viaje a América del Sur, viajó a Washington DC donde se reunió con el ex presidente Thomas Jefferson, y luego regresó a París y Berlín, donde comenzó a dar conferencias sobre sus aprendizajes en todo el mundo. A finales de los 70, en 1845 publicó „Kosmos“, que incluía sus conferencias detalladas que crecían en popularidad cada año. Poco después, se publicaron cinco volúmenes totales del libro. Desafortunadamente, después de un ataque cerebral a mediados de los 80, la salud de Humboldt comenzó a declinar y finalmente lo llevó a la muerte el 6 de mayo de 1859. Hasta el día de hoy, Humboldt es reconocido internacionalmente por sus importantes contribuciones que aún se utilizan en las ciencias de la tierra.

Para celebrar la vida y las contribuciones de Alexander von Humboldt, Humboldt 250, en la región de Berlín-Brandeburgo, albergará diversas exposiciones, conferencias científicas y eventos organizados por 13 instituciones culturales participantes. Como contribuyente cosmopolita, su país de origen no es el único que celebra su vida.
