Alexandra, as an engineer-turned-auditor, do you find any parallels between the structured thinking required in engineering and the attention to detail needed in auditing? How has this connection helped you during your first busy season?
Yes, definitely. In engineering, there is a strong emphasis on analytical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to break down complex systems into manageable components. These skills are highly transferable to auditing, where meticulous attention to detail is crucial for identifying errors, inconsistencies, and potential risks.
Just as in engineering, where a step-by-step approach is taken to design and analyse systems, I apply a similar mindset in auditing. I break down the audit process into manageable tasks, ensuring that each aspect is thoroughly examined and documented.
Moreover, engineering taught me the importance of precision and accuracy in data analysis. In auditing, attention to detail is vital when reviewing financial statements, conducting reconciliations, and examining supporting documentation. My engineering background has trained me to be meticulous in my work and to scrutinise every detail, which has been invaluable during my first busy season as an auditor.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during this period, and how did you overcome them?
During my first busy season, I encountered several significant challenges. One of the most prominent obstacles was adapting to the substantial volume of new domain knowledge required in the field of auditing. As an engineer, I had to familiarise myself with accounting principles, auditing standards, and financial regulations. This learning curve was initially daunting, as it involved understanding complex concepts and terminology specific to the auditing profession.
To overcome this challenge, I adopted a proactive approach. I dedicated extra time to studying and researching the necessary materials. I delved into relevant textbooks, industry publications, and online resources to expand my knowledge and grasp the fundamentals of auditing. Additionally, I actively engaged with my colleagues, seeking their guidance and insights on specific topics. Their support was invaluable, as they shared their expertise and provided me with practical advice to navigate the intricacies of auditing.
Can you share a memorable moment or experience that had a significant impact on your personal or professional growth?
One particularly memorable moment that had a significant impact on both my personal and professional growth was my first inventory audit. It stands out in my mind because it was a unique and challenging experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone.
At the outset, I felt a mix of excitement and apprehension as I was going to work in an external environment, interacting directly with the client's team and conducting a physical count of their inventory. The responsibility of accurately verifying and reconciling the inventory was immense, and I couldn't help but feel the pressure to perform well.
However, I was fortunate to have the guidance and support of my manager throughout the process, who provided me with clear instructions, shared their expertise, and answered my questions, which helped alleviate some of my initial worries. Their presence and confidence in my abilities gave me the boost I needed to approach the audit with determination and focus.
What advice or insights would you give to someone preparing for their first busy season in audit?
Firstly, I would say that it is very important to organise your time and manage priorities. The busy season in audit can be demanding, with multiple engagements and tight deadlines. It is crucial to develop strong organisational skills and prioritise your tasks effectively. Create a schedule or to-do list to keep track of your assignments and deadlines. Break down complex projects into smaller, manageable tasks, and allocate time for each. By organising your time and managing priorities efficiently, you can stay on top of your workload and reduce stress.
Secondly, you need to seek guidance and support. Auditing can involve complex tasks and unique challenges, especially for someone new to the field. If you find yourself stuck on a task or facing difficulties, ask for assistance from more experienced team members or your supervisor. They can provide valuable insights, share their knowledge, and offer practical solutions to overcome obstacles. Remember that teamwork and collaboration are essential in the audit profession.
Thirdly, embrace a growth mindset and take care of yourself. Recognise that it is a learning opportunity and a chance to develop new skills and expand your knowledge, while also prioritising self-care. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly to maintain your energy levels and overall well-being. Take short breaks throughout the day to recharge and clear your mind. Additionally, find healthy ways to manage stress, such as practicing mindfulness, engaging in hobbies, or spending time with loved ones. By taking care of yourself, you will be better equipped to handle the demands of a busy season.
Surely, by implementing these pieces of advice, you can navigate the busy season more effectively and lay a strong foundation for a successful career in auditing.
If you were to describe this period using a movie reference, which film would come to your mind and why?
Probably ‘Apollo 13’. This movie is a good comparison because it showcases the power of teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance in the face of challenges.
In ‘Apollo 13’, the astronauts and mission control teams face a life-threatening crisis when an oxygen tank explodes aboard their spacecraft. They must quickly adapt and work together to overcome unforeseen obstacles and find innovative solutions to bring the astronauts safely back to Earth.
Similarly, during the busy season in audit, auditors often encounter unexpected challenges, tight deadlines, and complex tasks. Like the astronauts in the movie, auditors must rely on their collective knowledge, collaboration, and problem-solving skills to navigate these challenges successfully.
The film highlights the importance of effective communication, trust, and shared goals – elements that are also crucial in the audit profession.
