Warsaw, March 20, 2021: Mazars, an international audit, tax and advisory firm, Noerr, an independent European law firm and SpotData analytical center, published an industry report entitled "E-commerce in Poland: company development strategies. Report 2020 ". The report presents the most important data on the market, key trends and methods of competition used by industry leaders in Poland and around the world.
The analysis of Mazars, Noerr and SpotData shows that the value of the Polish e-commerce market in 2020 amounted to as much as PLN 70 bn. After many years of growth at a rate well below 20 percent per year, the period of COVID-19 epidemic has brought an almost threefold acceleration (to 43 percent yoy). A part of this extraordinary growth will certainly be temporary. But we believe that even after the epidemic, e-commerce sales will still be about 10-20% higher than in the scenario of the market development without the impact of COVID-19.
The authors of the analysis estimate that by 2025 the e-commerce retail market will grow at a rate of 10-15% annually, and the fastest growth will be in the sale of food, medicines and home furnishings.
One of the most important changes in online commerce during the COVID-19 epidemic is the accelerated modernisation of sales channels among the leaders of traditional brick and mortar trade. While for the largest technology giants 2020 has produced tailwinds, it has become a real breakthrough for traditional companies. They have begun to catch up in technological terms and, paradoxically, they can benefit the most from turbulence associated with the epidemic.
“For some companies, launching online sales has become a necessity to survive. Therefore, decisions on the distribution of products and services via electronic channels were made faster, and the market accelerated not only in terms of turnover, but also technological development and the introduction of new business models by companies from the traditional trade area,” says Monika Nowecka, Partner responsible for Financial Institutions Audit and Advisory Services, Vice President of the Management Board of Mazars Polska Sp. z o.o.
In addition to the market characteristics, the report also includes recommendations for business development in the e-commerce industry, based on a detailed analysis of the activity, strategy and financial results of the largest and most dynamic companies. It turns out that two areas are key to achieving success on the e-commerce market: resources (technologies, logistics, competences) and economies of scale. The presented recommendations concern these two perspectives.
„Our report contains tips that may be valuable for companies already operating on the e-commerce market, as well as for those who are just considering investing in this type of distribution channel,” says Jakub Lerner, Associated Partner responsible for the practice of corporate law / mergers and acquisitions at Noerr.
