Tax and VAT Processes

Value-added tax (VAT) and tax processes constitute essential elements in the financial management of any business. In this guide, we provide a comprehensive overview of both tax processes and VAT processes in Norway, along with offering expert assistance to handle them effectively.

Tax Processes

Sometimes, entrepreneurs and the Norwegian tax authorities have different opinions about what is right and wrong. When the Norwegian tax authorities have a differing opinion from yours, we help drive the process. We know the laws, we handle any appeal cases, and we answer questions from the Norwegian Tax Administration. This allows you to focus on running your business.

We assist you with the following:

  • Establishing an "open claim" in the declaration to reduce the risk of tax surcharges and additional taxation.
  • Assisting with tax audits.
  • Responding to inquiries from the Norwegian Tax Administration.
  • Drafting responses to the Norwegian Tax Administration's assessments and proposed decisions.
  • Appealing the Norwegian Tax Administration's decisions or alternatively requesting a review of already made decisions.
  • Applying for a postponement of tax and tax surcharge payments.
  • Submitting your claim to the administrative courts (the administrative court, the court of appeal).

Value-Added Tax (VAT)

Value-added tax (VAT) is payable to the state on taxable sales of goods and services by those who meet the requirements to be VAT-registered.

This applies to trade within Norway, purchases from other EU countries, and imports. For each transaction made, your business must determine, among other things, in which country the transaction takes place, whether the transaction is subject to VAT or exempt from VAT, who is liable to pay the VAT, and which tax rate should be applied.

The right to deduct VAT generally exists when a purchased good or service is to be used in your business's VAT-liable activities, but for the deduction to be allowed, the right to deduct must also be proven through a document that meets the requirements of the VAT Act for an invoice.

We offer assistance with pronounced VAT strategy and procedures so that you gain control over your business's VAT management. Our VAT experts identify your business's risks and issues in time, providing you with secure and long-term VAT management. Mazars has approximately 23,000 employees in 89 countries. The close collaboration conducted with VAT specialists globally enables us to quickly assist you with VAT issues that arise in other countries during international trade.

Together, these aspects constitute a comprehensive guide for the effective handling of both tax and VAT processes, with expert assistance available to ensure that your business meets all requirements and manages any challenges in a safe and professional manner.
