Sustainability reporting is very much in the international news. On June 26, the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) published the definitive versions of its first two standards, IFRS S1, General Requirements for Disclosure of Sustainability-Related Financial Information, and IFRS S2, Climate Change Disclosures, laying the foundations for a globally recognized baseline for reporting on the financial effects of the risks and opportunities arising from sustainability issues.

There is still a great deal of news on the sustainability disclosure standards front, demonstrating the need to move forward as quickly and effectively as possible. On May 4, the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) published a Request for Information to gather stakeholders' views on the priorities that the ISSB should consider when setting its work plan now that the first two standards, IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, have been finalized (their publication is expected by the end of June 2023).

Less than six months after launching the standard-setting project, the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) seems well on the way to finalizing the amendments to IAS 12, and another major news item reported in this issue is the IASB’s recent publication of an Exposure Draft of proposed amendments to IFRS 9 and IFRS 7, following the first phase of the post-implementation review of IFRS 9.

IFRS Newsletter No. 03 – 2023
At its monthly meeting in February 2023, the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) continued its discussions on the Financial Instruments with Characteristics of Equity project (FICE) and reached a number of tentative decisions, which we discuss in detail in this issue. This project, based on a discussion paper published in June 2018, is intended to clarify the principles of IAS 32, to address the issues of its practical application and to improve disclosures. The Exposure Draft is expected in the second half of 2023.

The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) continued its redeliberations on primary financial statements, and also issued proposed amendments to IAS 12 as a result of the OECD Pillar Two rules. The International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) continued its discussions on draft IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 while the Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB) is being formed to address the unique needs of Canadian entities.

On December 21, the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) officially closed Phase 1 of the post-implementation review of IFRS 9, Classification and Measurement. While the IASB has concluded that IFRS 9, in general, meets the objectives of improving the financial information provided on financial instruments, the Board has nevertheless announced some draft amendments, to be issued in the first quarter of 2023.

As 2022 year-end closing approaches, we present our traditional overview of the new standards and amendments applicable at December 31. Once again, no major new standards have been published this year, but disclosures are required on the impact of standards issued by the IASB but not yet effective, particularly for insurers in view of the entry into force of IFRS 17 on January 1, 2023.
