Kariem Hoosain Partner - Audit
Kariem Hoosain has been elected Chairperson of the NGC. His association with the legacy firm (Baker Musikanth /Moores Rowland) goes back more than 30 years having started in 1988 as a trainee, to being qualified as a CA(SA) in 1992. He left the firm in 1996 to Join the TRC and then subsequently returned to the firm as a Partner in Forvis Mazars in 2009.
Kariem re-joined Forvis Mazars in January 2009 as an Advisory Partner in the Cape Town Office and is also responsible for Monitoring and developing Forvis Mazars Firms in various parts of Africa. As part of these responsibilities, he successfully negotiated and concluded a number of M&A’s for the Forvis Mazars group in Africa.
Kariem is currently a member of the Forvis Mazars Africa Regional Board and chairperson of the Forvis Mazars SA Governance Council. He previously provided a range of Advisory services to private & public sector clients including, Human Rights and Social Compliance, B-BBEE and advisory support to Business Rescue and Insolvency Practitioners in Forvis Mazars. This includes financial feasibility models, business case analysis and forensic accounting support.
During 2015 he also completed the Certificate in Insolvency Law and Practice with Distinction and is now a CIPC Registered Business Rescue Practitioner and is eligible to take appointments as Trustee or Liquidator.
Experience
Prior to his return to Forvis Mazars, he served as CEO of Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) during 2005 to 2008. As CEO, Kariem was responsible for leading the change of the institution from an industry led regulator to an independent and internationally recognised statutory regulator.
This also involved the restructuring of the organisation, including developing new regulatory policy, funding model and implementing new processes and controls.
He was also responsible for providing support to the Board in the execution of its mandate and strategic leadership and direction to the management and staff of the Board. Kariem was also instrumental in the establishment the International Forum for Independent Audit Regulators (IFIAR) in 2006, together with the FRC (UK), PCAOB (US) and other similar regulators.
For the period 1998 to 2005 Kariem was employed by the Auditor General of South Africa. At the AGSA he was part of the Corporate Executive management team, specifically responsible for the executive leadership of all 9 provincial operations, which involved close to 1000 staff and leading of a number of strategic organisational transformation projects.
Kariem also has significant corporate governance experienced, having served on various Boards, Advisory and Audit Committees, locally and internationally. This includes institutions like IFAC, IFIAR, IRBA, SAIPA, the Council for Medical Schemes and Universities.
