From numbers to new horizons: Ethan discovers his passion at Forvis Mazars

Meet Ethan, a third-year Accountancy student at Singapore Polytechnic who embarked on an unexpected journey into the world of outsourcing at Forvis Mazars. Discover how his curiosity and willingness to step outside his comfort zone led him to a fulfilling internship experience.

1. Ethan, you chose an internship in outsourcing, a path less travelled by accounting students. What sparked your curiosity about this field?

A: I've always had a knack for numbers and problem-solving, which naturally drew me to accounting. But when I saw the opportunity to intern in outsourcing at Forvis Mazars, I was intrigued. It was a chance to broaden my horizons and see accounting from a different perspective. I'm so glad I took that leap of faith!

2. What specific aspects of Forvis Mazars made you choose this firm for your internship?

A: The firm's reputation for excellence and its commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment really resonated with me. During my interview, I immediately felt a sense of warmth and camaraderie. The emphasis on teamwork, flexibility, and work-life balance convinced me that Forvis Mazars was the right place for me to grow and learn.

3. How did your past experiences, both in school and outside, prepare you for the challenges of an internship in outsourcing?

A: My accounting coursework laid a solid foundation for understanding the financial aspects of outsourcing. But it was my previous internship in tax that truly prepared me for the professional world. I learned the importance of clear communication, asking questions, and adapting to a fast-paced environment.

At Forvis Mazars, I had the chance to apply my theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, which deepened my understanding of accounting principles. I also honed my practical skills by using Excel and other software to generate reports, which was both challenging and rewarding.

4. Can you share a memorable moment or experience that highlights the supportive culture at Forvis Mazars?

A: One standout memory was a post-peak period celebration with my accounting team. We went to a board game café after work, had dinner, and played games together. It was a relaxed and fun way to bond with my colleagues outside of the office, and it made me feel like a valued part of the team.

The firm also organised monthly birthday celebrations and other events, creating a sense of community and camaraderie. I was particularly touched by the intern appreciation event hosted by the HR team. It showed me that Forvis Mazars genuinely cares about its interns and wants us to feel welcomed and appreciated.

5. Looking back, what is the most valuable lesson you've learned during your internship?

A: I've learned the importance of balance – balancing speed with accuracy, balancing work with personal life, and balancing learning with contributing. Initially, I struggled with the fast-paced nature of client deadlines, but with the guidance of my senior, who is also my buddy, I learned to create timelines and prioritise tasks effectively.

This experience has taught me to be proactive and adaptable. I now understand the importance of planning ahead, anticipating challenges, and seeking help when needed. These are skills that will undoubtedly benefit me in my future career and in life.
